From 2020-2023 I served as the assistant graduate coordinator for the undergraduate WISP program, overseeing the undergraduate team who plans monthly events for their cohort of ~150 students, have 1-on-1 mentors and mentees, and departmental team events.
Letters to a Pre-Scientist is a fantastic program in which STEM professionals are matched with a student penpal for one year at a time. This program aims to help encourage “pre-scientists” aka the student penpal to be a scientist and breakdown the stereotype of what a “typical” scientist is, we are all humans!
One of my main outreach goals that I will pursue throughout my career is to help facilitate communication and transfer for community college students to four-year universities. STEM fields can be particularly intimidating for those who take the non-traditional route and many careers in STEM fields are not commonly known and that needs to change!
